Dusk Dragon by HypnoticAlien Dusk Dragon by HypnoticAlien
I've been itching to make a dragon for a while, finally got around to finishing him. I had a real blast making him, so I will definitely be making more soon.

He's five inches tall, six inches long, and he has a thirteen inch wingspan. As always, he's made of air-drying clay over a wire and aluminum foil armature. Used metallic acrylics on this guy because I'm attracted to shininess.

Awesome! I really like the twisty, spiny design, and the black metallic coloring is badass. You had better make more, or else.

HypnoticAlien,

I find this one to be very interesting. Every bit of detail on this fine specimen is amazing to me. Maybe it's because I'm so "alien" to this form of art.

May I suggest making a "dawn" dragon to go with this one? They would make the perfect pair.

Thank you. I'd like to sell some, I'm working on finding a more durable clay that will be able to withstand being shipped.

question: how do you get the wings to stand out like that without breaking?

The whole dragon has a wire armature inside of it, it provides a nice skeletal support for the clay as it dries. The wing armature resembles what I imagine the bone structure of a dragon wing would look like (pretty much just like a bat wing). The clay I use is pretty strong and hard when dry, so almost any form can be achieved as long as it has something firm to cling to while it is drying. I didn't properly affix the clay of his wings to his body so they were flopping around a bit, but thanks to the wire they never completely came free. A little bit of two part epoxy fixed him up quite nicely. :)

what clay did you use, may I ask?

It's called DAS, manufactured by Prang (in Italy!). It's not too expensive, around $5 for a little over two pounds. It's pretty lightweight, dries fairly hard with exposure to air, and it doesn't seem to shrink much, if at all. I've never had any issues with cracking. Some types of clay shrink a lot while drying, which causes the clay to crack off the armature.
